Have you tried using bell ringers in your high school health science class? Bell ringers have been part of my daily classroom routine since my first day of teaching 10 years ago. I would argue it is the one classroom routine I can’t live without. Keep reading for why I can’t live without this routine and how I incorporate bell ringers in my health science classroom.

Classroom Management

Starting the first day of school I “train” students to quietly walk in the classroom, read the board, and follow the directions. Students learn to get out their Daily Bell Work Journal and complete the task for the beginning of the class period. Establishing this routine allows me to take attendance and sets the tone for students to focus and be ready to learn.

Student Engagement

When I first started teaching, my bell ringers were redundant and getting students to engage was like pulling teeth. After trial and error, I found having a theme for each day of the week is something students find engaging. Think of using themes as a sneaky way to spiral content, expose students to new concepts, or to build critical thinking or research skills. In my Essential Healthcare Skills class I use this Daily Bell Work Journal to expose students to basic medical terminology and medical math.

    Informal Assessment

Bell ringers are a great way to informally assess concepts from the previous day and the best part is you don’t have to formally grade them. As students finish their bell work I look it over and stamp their paper, showing completion. I never thought high school students would love stamps and stickers too!
