Are you looking to give your teacher desk a face lift, but don’t want to spend hours doing so? When I moved into my classroom I was overwhelmed by the massive old, oak furniture in my classroom, but I didn’t want to spend hours trying to revamp my teacher desk area. In this post I will share with you how I gave my teacher desk a makeover without spending hours on it! The best part is it cost me under $20!
The Goal: Low Budget and Time Saving
The goal of my teacher desk makeover was to complete it for under $20 and under 2 hours! My limitations were I couldn’t use paint and it couldn't be permanent. The ugly oak isn’t my jam, so I decided on contact paper, which I was reluctant because the last time I tried using contact paper I tore it off out of frustration and ditched the project altogether.
Some Tips and Tricks
This time I went into it with a plan - measure and cut all of the pieces of contact paper first, then apply it! Make sure to wipe off the surfaces - I just used a damp cloth. This is the contact paper I used and was SO easy to apply! I was able to rub the air bubbles with my hand and they disappeared! I didn’t use any tool to smooth is out, only my hands.
A money saving tip is to incorporate things you might already have on hand. I went through my garage/holiday decorations box and found a couple of things I could use, so the only thing I had to buy was the contact paper. If you are into the artificial grass background this is what I had on hand from Easter decor. I used this adhesive to hang it and after a month it is still secure! Here is the finished product! Next year I might take on the project of covering the shelving behind my desk, but as of now I didn’t want to spend the time on it.
